While at swimming lessons at age 10, Dr. Golemba’s mother wondered why he wasn’t waving back at her from the pool. It turned out he couldn’t see her, so she took him for an eye exam where he was diagnosed with myopia (near-sightedness). Year after year, his curiosity about the profession grew with each visit to the Optometrist. So too, did the length of his eyeballs and the thickness of his glasses. Years later, he obtained his Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. He had always wondered whether something could have been done to reduce his myopia. His curiosity around myopia research led him to Washington, DC in 2019 to attend a large myopia conference which was followed by several courses through the Brien Holden Foundation to bring myopia management to Port Alberni. In 2020, Dr. Golemba was awarded by the BCDO the prestigious award of Optometrist of the Year. Separate from clinical duties, Dr. Golemba has also been a guest speaker at several conferences both in Canada and abroad. When not at work, Dr. Golemba enjoys Playing Hockey, Snowboarding, Dirt Biking, and spending time with his wife, Shannon, their children, Aiden and Sejal, and their pug dogs, Rosie and Sophee.
